Information about placements
The Placements Team support employers who are looking to advertise placement opportunities directly to students. The eligibility criteria for placement opportunities can differ amongst different degree programmes, we can help you navigate through this to ensure your needs as an employer are balanced with programme requirements. Students are interested in a range of opportunities working for large global companies to SMEs both in the UK and overseas.
We offer free and impartial advice on the current placement market, how to attract the best students, salaries, best-practice recruitment strategies and tailored advice on embedding students into your company to get the maximum value. Whether you are an experienced placement provider or are looking to take on your first placement student, we are here to talk you through each step.
Placements usually last between 9-12 months and run from June/July to the following summer. They tend to be arranged 6-12 months in advance, with the most popular time of advertising being October to April. As well as displaying your vacancy for free on our university jobs board CareerConnect, your opportunity will also be sent to appropriate students who are actively looking for a placement year. There are also a number of sessions for employers to present placements opportunities to students and/or attend School specific career fairs.
Many employers recruit graduates directly from their placement students, creating a pipeline of talent directly to their doorstep. This is particularly important in Engineering and Tech industries however it is becoming more commonplace across all industry sectors. Hiring a placement student is also a great way to increase your brand amongst our students, as returning students often present on their experience to the following years’ placement cohort. It is also a great way to build stronger relationships with the University.
