Get to know our students

With a student population of over 40,000 and 1,000 degree programmes spread across three Faculties, The University of Manchester is one of the biggest universities in the UK. The University of Manchester is also the UK's most targeted university by recruiters and employers (High Fliers, 2022), many recruiters finding the diversity of our student population a key attraction.

Our diverse student population

The University of Manchester is committed to widening the participation of groups who are currently under-represented in Higher Education, for more details on this commitment see The University’s Widening Participation page and the targeted initiatives that are in place via the Access to Participation Plan (APP).

The Careers Service is committed to supporting recruiters to improve social mobility and diversity in the workplace. Students from less privileged backgrounds sometimes face barriers which may prevent them from competing fairly with their peers in the graduate recruitment market, our service is therefore dedicated to improving the skills and graduate destinations of our widening participation (WP) students.

Resources to help you increase the social diversity of your graduates include the ISE Social Mobility Toolkit which has information on how to develop your strategy, attract candidates from a more diverse talent pool, build an unbiased selection process and create a development programme that retains your talent. Additionally the Social Mobility Commission Toolkit offers practical help to support employers who are seeking to attract and develop talent from all socio-economic backgrounds.

Our international talent pool

Our full-time international students (including from the EU) make up around 25% of our student population representing over 160 countries. If you are seeking to recruit to roles outside the UK there are many opportunities throughout the year to engage with our international students both on campus and virtually. These include careers fairs and events, recruiter presentations as well as advertising your vacancies through CareerConnect.

Following the launch of the Graduate Visa, international graduates are able to stay and work in the UK without sponsorship. As a UK recruiter there is further information about the Graduate Visa/Route: https://www.gov.uk/graduate-visa for which the graduate is responsible for applying.

Become a mentor

The programme will match current students at the University of Manchester with a mentor from our Alumni community, to support them with career planning, decision making and preparing for their next steps after University.
