Internship & Work Experience FAQs

How much should I pay a student?

There is no fixed level, and it varies with the industry and job but it is important that they are paid at least the minimum wage. We would recommend that IT and Computer Science graduates be paid the market rate. This is because of the current shortage of these skills. Engineering positions should also reflect the current market rates and be higher than our recommended average.

Please be aware of your obligations as an employer if offering internships and work experience. Further information can be found via the link above.

When are students available for part-time work?

Students will be available at different times depending on the type of work that you want to recruit them for. Timings may be as follows:

Casual vacation work:

  • Christmas vacation - available full-time from mid December through until January
  • Easter vacation - available full-time from early-mid April (depending when Easter falls) for approx 2 weeks
  • Summer vacation - available full-time from mid-June until mid-September.

Part-time work:

  • Available all year round (though less available during summer period when students are away for an extended period).

When are students available to start internships?

Students are available to start work as soon as they complete their exams in late June or early July. Recruitment for positions starting in June can commence earlier in the year from February onwards.

What if I want to shorten or extend the internship?

If you would like to extend the students contract of employment beyond the initial internship period, and the student also wishes this, we would be happy to see this happen.

If the internship has to be curtailed for whatever reason, we would ask that the student receives the appropriate notice as indicated in their contract letter.

Summer internships can be an ideal way to identify talent for future employment i.e. part-time hours during term-time or full time roles on completion of their courses.

Are your students work ready?

The majority of students from The University of Manchester will have gained work experience during their studies.

Typical work experience can include bar work, volunteering, waitressing and so on. Additionally many of our students have had extra curricula responsibilities from running and participating in clubs and societies, charity work and leadership programmes.

Some may have had professional experience working part-time or from other types of work experience, e.g. part-time web developer, part-time translator or Campus Brand Manager.

Can I employ international students?

Whilst students are enrolled on a programme at The University of Manchester, students are eligible to work part time during their studies, full time during the summer or on a course related industrial placement.
