Mentoring at The University of Manchester

The Careers Service at The University of Manchester has been running successful mentoring programmes since 1998. Mentoring continues to be extremely popular amongst our students and has a strong reputation on campus.

Manchester Gold Mentoring

Our programme follows a traditional mentoring model of establishing one-to-one relationships between mentor and mentee. We currently offer two programmes; Manchester Gold Autumn and and Manchester Gold Spring (both open to all students). Through a combination of meetings, emails and telephone conversations, a mentor will provide support to their mentee from November - April (Autumn) and February – July (Spring). We estimate that Manchester Gold Mentoring will involve around 15 – 20 hours of time during each of these periods.

You can choose which programme you wish to participate in, or take part in both. If you opt to be involved in both programmes, you would be matched with a different mentee each time.

Mentors who want to take part in Manchester Gold will need to register on our exclusive mentoring portal – the Manchester Network. Through the portal, student mentees will review mentor profiles and request a mentor who best fits their career interests and goals. Mentors will have the ultimate say over whether they want to accept or decline the student mentee. The Manchester Gold team does not match mentors with students.

The programme is flexible in terms of how, when, where and for how long mentees and mentors meet/communicate. We offer advice and guidance about how best to manage your mentoring partnership in the mentor training session.

For mentors based overseas, mentoring can be facilitated entirely online or over the telephone and training can also be completed online.

Who can participate?

Mentors from all sectors and roles are involved in Manchester Gold. However, due to student demand, currently we are only accepting applications from mentors in the following industries:

  • Media and Broadcasting
  • Marketing and PR
  • International Relations
  • Government and Social Services
  • Voluntary/Charity sector
  • Banking and Finance
  • Psychology
  • Creative Arts/Design

Mentees from all degree disciplines and year groups are eligible to apply for the Manchester Gold Autumn and Spring Mentoring programmes.

Ask Me About

Our "Ask Me About" programme is an excellent resource for both mentors and students who are unable to commit to a long-term mentoring relationship but would like to connect on a one-off basis for careers-related advice. During registration onto Manchester Network, mentors are kindly asked to select the “Ask Me About” service first, before selecting the Manchester Gold programmes they wish to mentor on this year.
